Entertainment is a key factor in the overall success of your event. Finding the right Disc Jockey is important to ensure this success. Before you begin your search for the “perfect” disc jockey, there are a few questions for you to answer on this page that will make your quest much easier. Part two will help narrow down the many choices you have when it comes to Disc Jockey services.
1. What type of an event are you having? Corporate events and wedding receptions require a much more experienced talent to handle the subtle details that make those events a success. High school dances and fraternity parties feed off of the energy and antics of the disc jockey. Both types of events require completely different “types” of Disc Jockeys. Very few companies do all of them well.
2. What are you looking for in entertainment? Many companies offer several different options such as premium lighting packages, emcee services, karaoke, and music videos. Decide what is appropriate for your event. Do you want an energetic entertainer who will interact with your guests, or do you prefer that the Disc Jockey provide a more low key approach and only make necessary announcements? A professional service will be capable of providing any style that you prefer. They will always perform knowing that it is YOUR event and not their show
3. From a technical standpoint, what are your requirements? Companies often offer optional equipment such as; lcd projectors, video screens, and additional wireless microphones. If your guest count is over 350, you may want to consider additional sound equipment to enhance your event such as subwoofers and additional speakers.
4. What is your budget? Because each event is unique and there are many different options to consider (lighting, karaoke, video, etc.), decide what is important to you. How many hours you want the disc jockey to perform? Are they providing background music for cocktails and dinner? Disc jockey rates vary based on talent, experience, emcee ability, service, coordination, equipment needed, music knowledge, and personality. Rates for the DJ industry vary greatly, ranging from $250.00 to $2,000.00 with an average of $1,000.00 for a four hour booking. A full-service Disc Jockey company will normally invest 12 to 30 hours into your special event, but it may appear that you are only paying for "four hours". Consultations, music editing, preparation, set-up and tear-down, education and other business related endeavors add up to the success of your event. Surveys conclude that nearly 100% of brides would have spent more money on their entertainment and made it their #1 priority in hindsight Entertainment is just as important as the location and the food. If you are having your event at a five-star venue, do you really want two-star entertainment? The lowest price is not always the best deal. An unprofessional disc jockey can ruin your event, leaving a lasting impression with your guests.
PART II - FINDING THE TALENT There a several resources available to find a quality disc jockey service. Most event facilities have a “preferred” vendor list that is given to you when you tour the venue. The yellow pages have always been a place to start, but the internet is now gaining popularity when searching for entertainment companies. Disc Jockey associations have online databases that are searchable for your area. Once you have selected the companies to call, keep the following in mind:
1. What services are offered other than just playing music? Most companies offer master of ceremonies other services may include music videos and karaoke.
2. Is the entertainer experienced in providing services for your type of event? Have them elaborate on what they have done for similar events.
3. Is backup equipment provided and immediately available in the event of any problems? A professional company always has backup gear in case of failure.
5. Does the company have the appropriate music for your event? If your event is themed (Mardi Gras, Studio 54, 1940’s Speakeasy, etc), does the company have the musical selections and experience to entertain your guests? Is their selection wide enough to take requests from your guests? If they don’t have a specific song you require, will they get it for you free of charge?
6. What is the company’s expertise? Most companies find a niche market to serve. If you are looking for a corporate disc jockey, make sure they have the experience to back up the claim. Anyone can play music for an event, but not everyone can keep an event on track and running smoothly.
7. Is the company insured? Can they supply you with proof of liability insurance? Most event facilities require proof and will not let your disc jockey perform without it.
8. Who will perform at your event? Some companies have several disc jockeys that work for them. Be sure to meet with the person that will perform at your event.
9. Be sure that you get a clear, concise, written contract. It should spell out all of the details of your event, including; fees, times, location, and options.
10. It is very important to like the people you are interested in hiring. Your entertainment company should be your salvation, and once hired, take care of the necessary details for you. If you are not comfortable with the company you are speaking with, thank them and move on. If you like the company, they offer the services you require, and they match your expectations, HIRE THEM!
